Achim Voss

I am an adventure, landscape and documentary photographer who strives to capture the deep, rich colours of nature and life in general. A passionate person, I became consumed with photography while travelling in Scandinavia in the early 1980s. During my first journey to Norway, I was inspired by the grandiose landscapes of mountains and endless coastlines. I want you to feel inspired by my journey and passion for capturing the beauty of the world around us.

I have used camera formats ranging from 35 mm and medium format to the latest in digital camera technologies. I mainly photograph with digital equipment now. Since the beginning, I have been true to the Pentax system, sticking with it ever since I started photography. Part of this was that many people always consider Pentax the underdog in the professional SLR market. I like to sympathise with underdogs. I admired them for not changing their mount when autofocus came along, which I found very honest. Their equipment and lenses are as fine as any and have served me very well in many areas and countries around the world, and they have never let me down. For rangefinders, I have used the Leica M-4P and M-6 extensively during my film days, and now also use the Leica M and the Leica Q2 digital cameras. I also use the Olympus MFT system extensively, as well as a Fuji X100S and Ricoh GR III cameras, which come close to my Leicas. I call myself both a "photo enthusiast" and a passionate photographer. I love what I do, and I want you to feel assured of my technical expertise and dedication to quality in my work.

I have been photographing since I was 18 years old (quite a while ago), and as such, it is a lifelong passion. Currently, my hard drives are filled with thousands of images, photos of family, strangers, events, street life, travel, wildlife and whatever else. So far, I have used about 20 different cameras, in all sorts of styles, to take these images. I never sold a camera I bought, though I have gifted some to people close to me who showed an interest in photography; those that I do not use are packed away.

Having lived in the Middle East and South Asia for more than 30 years, developed my cross-cultural understanding and sensitivity. This allows me to work effectively in both my world and the world of the people I am photographing. In the past, my work has been featured in an exhibition and auction for an NGO in Gaza. International clients, including CIDA and an agency for Scandinavian photography and publications, have also used images. In addition, I have worked for a big international organisation as a staff photographer in the Middle East. The work featured here is mostly from 2001 onwards and was shot with digital cameras. I am currently scanning and editing my analogue work, which I will include on this site in due time.
